Scientific notation converter
Convert any number to scientific notation (a × 10ⁿ) and E-notation (a e n). It’s the compact way to write very large or very small numbers used in science and engineering.
How it works
A number is written as a mantissa between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten. For example 0.00042 = 4.2 × 10⁻⁴ (or 4.2e-4), and 93,000,000 = 9.3 × 10⁷. The exponent counts how many places the decimal point moves.
Frequently asked questions
What is E-notation? A computer-friendly form: 4.2e-4 means 4.2 × 10⁻⁴.
What does a negative exponent mean? A number smaller than 1 — the decimal point moves left.
