Data storage converter
Convert between bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and binary units.
Data storage converter
Convert data storage between bits, bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB) and the binary units KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB. Useful for file sizes, downloads, RAM and disk capacity. It all runs in your browser.
Decimal vs binary
Decimal units use powers of 1000: 1 KB = 1,000 B, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Binary units use powers of 1024: 1 KiB = 1,024 B, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB. Drive makers advertise in decimal (GB); operating systems often report in binary (GiB), which is why a “500 GB” disk shows as about 465 GiB.
Useful equivalents
1 byte = 8 bits. 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000 KB. 1 TB = 1,000 GB.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB in 1 GB? 1,000 MB in decimal, or 1,024 MiB in binary.
Why is my 1 TB drive smaller than 1 TB? The drive is 1 TB (decimal); your OS shows ~0.91 TiB (binary), so it looks smaller.
