Download time calculator

Estimate how long a download will take from a file size in megabytes (MB) and your connection speed in megabits per second (Mbps). Useful before downloading a game, ISO, video or large backup.

Why bytes vs bits matter

File sizes use megabytes (MB) but internet speeds are advertised in megabits (Mbps), and 1 byte = 8 bits. So the formula is time (s) = size (MB) × 8 ÷ speed (Mbps). Example: 700 MB at 50 Mbps ≈ 112 seconds (1 min 52 s). Real speeds are usually a bit lower than advertised.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t 50 Mbps the same as 50 MB/s? 50 Mbps is 50 megabits ≈ 6.25 megabytes per second, because there are 8 bits in a byte.

Will I get the full speed? Rarely — overhead, Wi-Fi and the server all reduce real throughput.
