Exponent calculator
Enter a base and an exponent to compute the power.
Exponent calculator
Raise any base to a power (bⁿ), including negative and decimal exponents. Useful for growth, areas and volumes, scientific notation and quick maths homework checks. It all runs in your browser.
How exponents work
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself: 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. A negative exponent is a reciprocal: 2⁻¹ = 1/2. A fractional exponent is a root: 9^0.5 = √9 = 3. Any non-zero number to the power 0 equals 1.
Frequently asked questions
What is a negative exponent? It means one divided by the positive power: x⁻ⁿ = 1/xⁿ.
Why does the result show “—”? Some inputs aren’t real numbers — for example a negative base with a fractional exponent.
