Percentage change calculator

Calculate the percentage increase or decrease from an original value to a new value, plus the absolute difference. Useful for price changes, growth, weight, scores and any before/after comparison.

Formula

Change % = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease. Example: from 80 to 100 is a +25% increase; from 100 to 80 is a −20% decrease (note the two are not symmetric).

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t a 25% rise cancelled by a 25% fall? Each percentage is taken from a different base, so the percentages aren’t symmetric.

What’s the difference from “X is what % of Y”? That compares two values; this measures the change from one to another.
